The first thing that was done those days was listening to the Dhamma because it was not written in books. People those days were literate. They wrote letters. They read books. But because of the respect for the Dhamma, they retained the Dhamma in their memories. Therefore, listening was considered important. It is so mentioned in many discourses. “Oh monks, listen carefully. Pay attention”. There are many places where the Lord Buddha asked the disciples/devotees to pay their attention in the above manner. The knowledge gained by listening to what is being preached is called “Sutā”.
